Dr. Xiaoping Qian received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan in 2001. He has been an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering at IIT since August 2004. Prior to his current position, he spent three years as a research scientist at GE Global Research Center in Schenectady, NY.

His research area is in geometric and physical modeling and their applications in design, manufacturing and robotic automation, and with increasing focus on emerging micro/nano systems. His current research interests are

o        Nanoscale imaging and manipulation through atomic force microscopy

o        Point based computational techniques

He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in nanoscale imaging and manipulation, CAD/CAM, and design and manufacturing.
