Dr.
Xiaoping Qian is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and
Aerospace Engineering at IIT. He
received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the He
directs the Computational Design
and Manufacturing Laboratory. His research interests lie in the general
area of computational design, analysis and manufacturing. His current
research activities include: 1.
Shape and topology
optimization. His group is developing new techniques and
applications in shape and topology optimization. Research in this area
includes B-spline based shape and topology optimization. 2.
Geometric
modeling and geometry processing of massive point-cloud data: Rapid advancement of
3D sensing techniques has spurred the growing use of massive point-cloud data
in various 3D applications. Our research focuses on developing mathematical
foundation and computational techniques for effectively processing dense
point data for product development use. 3.
Nano-manipulation
and assembly: Atomic force microscopes (AFM) are capable of nanoscale imaging and
manipulation. Our research focuses on developing tools and methods for
automating nano manipulation with the eventual goal of nanoscale device
prototyping. He
teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, including CAD/CAM, Design Optimization, Nanoscale
Imaging and Manipulation, and Machine
Element Design. Editorial Activities o Editorial Board, Computer-Aided Design (2012- present) o Associate
Editor, ASME Journal of Computing and
Information Science in Engineering (2009- present) o Editorial Board, CAD & CG (Chinese) (2010- present) o Associate
